Whether you have one pair or one hundred pairs, there’s something about shoes that really creates a passion! Having a perfect pair of shoes is just so important. There’s nothing worse than spending all that time and money on shopping around, finally settling on a pair and then discovering that, actually, they aren’t quite right after all. Buying shoes can be exciting, even for the most reluctant shopper, so getting it right and feeling a sense of satisfaction is really important. However, with so many types of shoes to choose from, it is hard to know where to start looking when it comes to making that essential decision.

Firstly, ask yourself what you actually want the shoes for. Is it a formal occasion, party, work, or leisure? Different shoes suit different functions, so know your venue and the dress code.

Have your feet measured. The size and shape of the feet can actually vary over time, and it doesn’t necessarily follow that you are always going to be a size 6, for example. Make sure that both feet are measured and fit the shoe to the longest foot. Remember to also have the foot width evaluated.

Try the shoes on. Have a good walk about in them in the shop and make sure that the foot fits comfortably into the heel area with no slipping. Make sure that there is enough room for the toes at the front of the shoe, allow about half an inch or a centimetre for comfort. Never buy shoes that are too tight in the hope that they will loosen, it is a false economy and will just lead to disappointment.

If you love your heels, be realistic about the height and style of the shoe for you. They might look ‘killer’, but the wrong fit and style could just end up killing your feet! Look for heels that have extra strength or wadding in the sole to give as much shock absorption as possible.

If you really have set your heart on a drop-dead-gorgeous pair of heels, then think about getting some special inserts for the shoe to increase comfort. Items like gel insoles that protect the ball of the foot or comfort heel grips to prevent blisters can make the difference between an evening of misery or an evening of good memories.
